Tony from Jamul, Ca wrote this winning haiku.

Sweet lips dance profound
Singing spirit leaps abound
My head swims at night.

Thanks, Tony! And, thanks to all of you who have contributed to our Haiku wall!

Kathryn

Many of you ask about Kathryn's other career each time she disappears from the winery tasting room. I decided to give you a glimpse of her performing life so that when she is famous you can say, "I knew her when...." This past week Kathryn was in Miami performing with the Firebird Chamber Orchestra. Lawrence Johnson reviewed the performance. You can read it at

After-hours Tasting

We tried out the idea of an after-hours tasting party on our Facebook fans. And it was a hit!

It was a quiet night in Sonoita, but the lights were on at Canelo Hills and everyone who attended had a great time mingling and tasting our wines, including the very limited 2007 Malvasia. There were yummy cheeses, and of course Emma the dog was on hand to entertain.

The party was casual and fun. Tim took some of our guests on an impromptu tour of the winery and explained the wine-making process. Afterwards our guests headed their separate ways, many of them to the yummy restaurants in Sonoita and Patagonia.

Two of our guests were so inspired, they contributed to our Wine & Western Haiku contest by writing a haiku, in Arabic! Here it is:

nahnu fi elgin
nashrabu el-khamrata
nahnu suaadaa

We are in Elgin
Drinking wine
And we are happy

It even fits haiku form!

We'll be sure to have other after-hours events in the future, so keep your eye out for an email or check out our events page.

Haiku

I am printing 2 Haikus from December. Actually, one is more of a poem.
From Claude:
Rolling Plains run to the line.
Beautiful sky Islands reach so high.
Vineyards that stretch to the Western Sky.
Yields the fruit of excellent AZ wine.

From Libby:
Cold air, graying skies
Wine in glass, warm inside me
Let the wind blow on.

Thanks for all those who submitted during 2008. We're looking for many more in 2009.

Ring it in

Wintertime in the Southwest is always exciting. This Christmas the whole family rendezvoused in Santa Fe where Kathryn was singing. We we greeted by a one foot mountain snow storm that snarled traffic but created a winter wonderland. Magic.

On returning to Arizona the same storm had obliged by painting the Santa Rita mountain peaks white. Beautiful. Who would have thought world class wine grapes could grow in this part of the world.

As 2008 came to a close Joan and I celebrated our good fortune and we hope 2009 is generous and gentle to you and your loved ones.
